GREAT photos are made from the inside. It doesn’t matter what the subject is, you need to be right in there, not just among the crowds but part of the scene. From the smoke and seeming chaos of burnout competitions to the strictly regulated world of the speed trials held on the vast expanses of shimmering salt in Bonneville, USA, and Lake Gairdner in South Australia, Simon Davidson is part of the scene.

Over the past decade it would be impossible to unpick the seams of Simon’s professional experience shooting custom and muscle cars from his own lifestyle, driving first a custom 1961 General Motors utility and now a 1964 Ford coupe. Living the life creates a deeper understanding of what you’re looking at, what the cars are going to do and what the people driving them are thinking. That’s when being in the right place shifts from pure chance to something far more calculated. Instead of waiting on the sidelines, you can anticipate the action and be ready because moments are over in much less than the blink of an eye.

That intimacy also makes it possible to capture the portraits that are an important part of Simon’s portfolio; he’s a trusted part of this world and people are relaxed when they spot him and his cameras. The strength and integrity in his personal work has translated well into a successful editorial and advertising career. Simon was born in New Zealand and still cheers passionately for the All Blacks but calls Sydney, Australia home with his wife and daughter. When not shooting advertising assignments or the fast, loud and greasy world of muscle car subculture, Simon can be found floating in the ocean searching for the perfect wave.
