One of the world’s most renowned and talented food photographers, Thomas Schauer has had a passion for capturing moments on film from an early age. Born in Austria in 1969, Thomas spent the first half of his life living and working in Austria. After obtaining his master’s certificate in photography at the most prestigious photography school in Austria, he opened his own studio in Vienna, and has since worked as a professional photographer for over 20 years. His projects have included working with Nespresso, Uncle Ben’s, and Henkel.

After perfecting several mediums within the field of photography—specifically architecture and portrait photography—his early interest in food and still life allowed Thomas to develop a specialty in photographing the culinary arts. He rapidly established himself as one of the world’s top culinary photographers and photojournalists. Chefs Daniel Boulud, David Bouley, and José Andrés realized his talents and gift and began having Mr. Schauer work on their various cookbook projects. In 2012 he was rewarded with the “Gourmand World Cookbook Award” for the best Cocktail and Drink book worldwide for “Cocktails”.

After seeing his work in the cookbooks of Michelin-Star chefs, the Wegman family of the Wegmans supermarket chain, engaged him seven years ago, and this relationship continues to expand and grow today. Because of the amount of U.S. clients he acquired, he began a monthly commute between Vienna and New York City. His client base, which includes Grand Marnier, BBDO, and Masterfoods, inspired Mr. Schauer to establish his main base in New York City in addition to his Austrian Studio, where he has been able to continue and further enhance the relationships with European clients.

While he has chosen to hone in and specialize in food, his talents are not limited to culinary photography. He has worked with major companies such as The New York Times, Hasbro, Universal Records UK, Warner Music, BMG, Harper Collins, Deutsche Postbank, and Fuji Film North America. Mr. Schauer’s work has been used in advertising campaigns worldwide.

Thomas currently resides in New York City with his wife and business partner Sahinaz. He divides his time between Vienna and New York. One of the unique advantages of having both European and American experiences is the ability it gives him to integrate the styles and impressions of both continents into his work.
