MAISON MARSIL

Köln

MAISON MARSIL is a boutique and design hotel located in Cologne’s Altstadt-Süd district. Situated at Marsilstein 25–27, it occupies a listed ensemble of historic buildings dating back to 1897. The hotel was opened on 1 May 2000 by Cyrus C. Halabian and Frank Schmitz. The generously sized rooms, ranging from 18 to 36 square metres, feature luxurious queen-size box-spring beds, modern bathrooms and, of course, a minibar.

Guests can enjoy a delicious vegetarian breakfast with front cooking – from organic scrambled eggs to cappuccino, everything is freshly prepared. The hotel bar hosts exhibitions and occasional events, while the air-conditioned bar, the ground-floor fireplace room and the light-filled conservatory can be booked for events, meetings and small conferences.

Cologne’s lively Belgian Quarter is right on the doorstep, numerous playgrounds are within walking distance, and the nearby Agrippabad offers an outdoor saltwater pool, wave pool and extensive sauna facilities.

MAISON MARSIL is the perfect address for design and architecture lovers, influencers, art enthusiasts, business travellers, Instagram lovers, Facebook oldies, fashion bloggers of every kind – and families with children who enjoy being right in the heart of the action.

History
Maison Marsil is located in a historic, listed ensemble of buildings at Marsilstein in central Cologne. Parts of the preserved original features date back to 1897. The hotel’s name refers to the historic Marsilstein. As early as Arnold Mercator’s map of Cologne from 1570/71, the location appears under the name “Am marcellen Stein”. The area, which later also became known as the Eselsmarkt, was officially renamed “Place Marsile” – in German “Am Marsilstein” – in 1812 during the French period.
The name derives from the so-called Marsilstein, a remnant of the Roman Eifel aqueduct around which various legends developed over the centuries. During the Middle Ages, the stone was believed to be the tomb of the legendary Marsilius. According to legend, Marsilius saved Cologne from the troops of Roman Emperor Vitellius through a clever ruse. A large section of the surviving aqueduct collapsed in 1566; the remaining sections were removed during construction work in the 18th century. Marsilius is still commemorated today, among other places, by a depiction on the eastern façade of Cologne’s Gürzenich. The building ensemble survived the destruction of the Second World War.

In 1999, Cyrus C. Halabian and Frank Schmitz opened Marsil at this location. Initially operated as an apartment hotel and, for a time, in conjunction with a bar, the hotel expanded over the following years and evolved into today’s Maison Marsil boutique and design hotel.

Concept and Design
The interior design incorporates elements of the building’s historic architecture. Several floors were finished in terrazzo, referencing the original terrazzo floor preserved in the entrance hall from the building’s construction period, which bears the initials F. J. Blume.

Press
In 2024, German travel magazine MERIAN included Maison Marsil in its selection of seven exceptional hotels in Cologne. It particularly highlighted the combination of historic architecture and 1950s design elements, as well as the art and photography displayed throughout the hotel.

In October 2025, German magazine Stern also featured Maison Marsil in its city guide, “The Best Addresses for a 48-Hour Trip to Cologne.”

The founders are currently working on their second hotel: MIRA D’OR DE MARSIL in Tenerife. Coming soon!
